Confidentiality

The Microbiology laboratory adheres strictly to the principles set out in the Caldicott Report (1997) and conforms with the Data Protection Act and Human Rights Act.

Audit

All staff participate in clinical and/or scientific audit as an essential component of continuous quality improvement.

Organ and Specimen Retention

The laboratory complies with all national clinical standards for organ and specimen retention.

Prescribing

Medical microbiologists and virologists work together with senior clinical and pharmacological colleagues to develop and monitor appropriate prescribing policies. These are reviewed regularly and updated in accordance with evidence-based practice.

Policies

The Microbiology Laboratory complies with all current Health and Safety requirements and will continue to implement policies to ensure the safety of the staff and working environment.

Accreditation

The Microbiology Laboratory is accredited by CPA (UK) Ltd and complies with current CPA standards.

The FWE laboratory is accredited by UKAS (Testing laboratory No. 1375) and is an EU Official Testing Laboratory.

Quality Assurance

The Microbiology laboratory participates fully in international external quality assessment schemes which cover the entire repertoire of tests performed by the laboratory.

An integrated system of internal quality control exists to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. Results are subject to formal review and any anomalies investigated thoroughly.

A quality service is given the highest priority.

The concerns/comments of users are both welcomed and reviewed regularly and promptly.

Feedback or comments about the service are appreciated and should be directed to the laboratory manager.

The information system used by the laboratory is the Isoft Telepath (Cache) product. All clinical requests and reports as well as Food & Environmental work are processed by this system.

Accessing Laboratory Results

National and regional communicable disease reporting is automated from the laboratory system using the CDSC LabMod software.
