1. What is the procedure recommended to the patient?
A blood test is when a sample of blood is taken normally form the middle of the arm. This involves placing a band (tourniquet) around the top of the arm to make the veins more palpable and visible. A small sterile needle is inserted and a sample of blood removed.
2. What are the benefits of you having this procedure?
This has been recommended by your doctor to diagnose, eliminate or monitor certain conditions or drug regimens.
3.What are the risks, consequences and alternatives associated with having the procedure?
- This procedure can result in bruising.

4.Will you be asked to a pre-admission appointment-what will happen?
No, an appointment is not necessary.
On receipt of the request form you may attend the phlebotomy/blood test department, situated in the out patients department on all three sites.

- Heartlands:- 08:45 - 15:00 for patients referred by GP
- Heartlands:- 08:45 - 17:00 Mon- Thurs - 08:45 - 16:30 Friday for patients referred by out patient clinic
- Solihull :- 08:00 - 16:00 for patients referred by GP
- Solihull :- 08:00 - 17:00 for patients referred by out patients clinic
5. Getting ready for the procedure?
For certain tests i.e. cholesterol or glucose you may be asked by your doctor to refrain from eating or drinking for twelve hour prior to your blood test
6. What sort of anaesthetic will be used?
None, this is NOT necessary for this minor procedure.
7. What should you expect after the procedure?
A small dressing will be applied and can be removed after one hour.
