Protocols for requesting post mortems are available from the Bereavement Office 41476 (BHH), 44379 (SH) and 49400(GHH). 

For viewing bodies call the appropriate ward or department who can then contact the relevant mortuary to a arrange an appointment. 42197 (BHH), 45566 (SH) and 47325(GHH).   

The arrangements for post mortem examination should be made via the Bereavement Office , 41476 (BHH), 44379 (SH) and 49400(GHH).  During the consent process Consultant Pathologists are available via appointment for advice and Information for relatives regarding the post mortem process.  For an appointment contactcan the Cellular pathology office extension 43193.

Where the cause of death is in doubt and a death certificate cannot be issued the case should be referred to H.M Coroner via the relevant Bereavement Office.

Protocols for fetal, stillbirth and perinatal post mortems are available from Eden Suite (ext. 42088). All fetal postmortems are completed at Birmingham Womens Hospital. Transport is arranged via local undertakers via the Mortuary.

Autopsies are usually carried out in the mornings and the clinician will be informed when the autopsy is completed and ready for demonstration.

All autopsies on SH and GHH patients are performed at the Birmingham Heartlands Hospital Mortuary.  The procedures for hospital and general practice autopsies are as for Heartlands Hospital.
