This unit provides microbiological support to a number of West Midlands Local Authority Environmental Health departments, as well as the host Trust. It is UKAS accredited and an EU Official testing laboratory.

The laboratory participates fully in local, national and European Union-wide surveillance programmes and has an important role in the investigation of food and water-borne outbreaks.

A number of staff are recognised as food examiners under the terms of the Food Safety Act 1990 and are available to advise environmental health and industry colleagues on FWE microbiology.
